Application by Trustpower to extend the exisiting Branch Hydro Scheme to include the Wairau River and construct, operate and maintain a hydroelectric power scheme within the Wairau Valley to increase power production in Marlborough.

Located in middle reaches of the Wairau Valley in Marlborough from approximately 2kms above the Branch River to approximately the confluence of the Wairau and Marchburn Rivers some 25kms west of Blenheim.

The proposed intake works are to commence approximately 2kms above the Branch/Wairau Rivers confluence with the final point of discharge to the Wairau River being approximately 46 kms

downstream (near the Wairau/Marchburn Rivers confluence).

Wairau River intake of 35m³/sec abstraction plus flushing flow.

Residual flow in Wairau River = seasonal regime varying from 10-20m³/sec.

Five new power stations.

Regulation storage pond of approximately 13ha.

Hydro canal capacity of 40m³/sec.

Total head of 190m (Gross).

Scheme capacity of 70.5MW.

Scheme output of 415 GWhrs.

Project manager contracted by the Marlborough District Council to manage resource consent process involving numerous resource consents sought covering land use, water permits and

discharge permits.
