Picton Library Waitohi Whare Matauranga - New Build
Project to masterplan, acquire land, design and construct a new public library at Picton.
Cost
$6.0 million
Year
2019
As part of the revitalisation of the Picton CBD, Marlborough District Council elected to provide Picton with a new library and customer service centre that meets modern library standards, gives the community a meeting venue, and helps regenerate the upper part of High Street, Picton. Council appointed APL to manage the task from concept to handover.
The new library was built adjacent to the old library building – which was left intact during the construction process, then demolished to provide for green spaces. In total, just four library trading days were lost.
APL managed all aspects of the project, which included the existing library site, acquisition of two additional sites ($1.45 million), amalgamation of the three sites, demolition of existing commercial buildings and the library, ($200,000), design and construction ($4.8 million), landscaping ($350,000), and fitout ($300,000).
As with all our projects, the APL team served as an advocate for our client, utilising specialist knowledge to ensure the process is informed and every aspect is comprehensively explored and analysed prior to breaking ground. Our team invested considerable effort up-front on information-gathering from stakeholders (particularly those who would be operating the new library), design and functionality, geotechnical and other pre-construction investigation. This also applied to the RFP criteria we set to determine which team was best able to deliver to these measures.
